Doctors consulting from Altona North Medical Hub include experienced GPs with qualifications in skin cancer medicine and surgery. They offer:
- Full body skin cancer checks (30 minutes) for early detection of melanoma and other skin cancers
- Spot checks (15 minutes) for assessing one or two specific moles or lesions
Suspicious spots may be monitored using specialised imaging software or removed for pathological examination.
What to expect during a skin check
At your first appointment, your doctor will ask about your medical history, medications, and any family history of skin cancer. Be sure to mention any new, changing, or symptomatic spots—especially those that itch, bleed, or feel painful.
For full-body checks, you’ll be asked to undress behind a curtain, keeping your underwear on. While genital areas are not routinely examined, you may request this if concerned. Lymph node regions (neck, armpits, groin) will be checked as standard.

Please avoid wearing makeup, lipstick, or nail polish to allow for accurate examination. Makeup remover is available if needed.
A dermatoscope—a magnifying device with a light—is used to closely examine skin spots. Images of suspicious areas may be taken and securely stored for monitoring and follow-up. You’ll be asked for consent if images are used for teaching or research purposes (with identifying features removed).
If a suspicious lesion is found, your doctor may perform a biopsy (punch, shave, or excision) under local anesthetic. Some procedures may require a follow-up appointment.
If surgery is needed, it may be performed at the clinic or through referral to a specialist.
