For many women, a common method of birth control is an IUD. The hormonal intrauterine device (IUD) is a small contraceptive device that is put into the uterus (womb) to prevent pregnancy. They are popular in Australia, as a long-lasting, affordable, effective, and safe form of contraception.

What is an IUD?

IUD is an intrauterine device that is inserted into the cervix, which acts as a contraceptive that is over 99% effective. It can be inserted by a general practitioner that is trained in its insertion.

In Australia, two main types of IUDs are available: hormonal IUDs and copper IUDs. Hormonal IUDs, such as Mirena and Kyleena, release progestogen (a type of hormone) to prevent pregnancy. Copper IUDs, like Paragard, work by releasing copper ions that interfere with sperm and egg.

In your pre-consult, you can discuss with your GP the best IUD option for you.

Booking an IUD Insertion

Before booking the procedure, you must have a consultation with your GP.

The pre-consult will involve reviewing medical history, discussing IUD options, answering questions and explaining the insertion process.

Additionally, your doctor may advise the following tests

  • Physical Examination: A pelvic exam may be conducted to assess the size and position of your uterus.
  • STI Screening: Your doctor may recommend testing for sexually transmitted infections, if you are at increased risk, as an infection can increase the risk of pelvic inflammatory disease if an IUD is inserted.
  • Pregnancy Test: A pregnancy test is generally recommended before IUD insertion to ensure no pregnancy is present. Inserting an IUD while pregnant can increase the risk of miscarriage or other complications.
